Straight answers

Good
questions.

Still curious? Read the architecture and roadmap on GitHub.

Is AirScribe really free?

Yes. AirScribe is MIT-licensed. Core dictation, all three engines, local cleanup, meetings and history are free. The only thing that can cost money is a cloud API key you optionally bring yourself.

Does it work completely offline?

Yes, after any optional one-time model downloads. Transcription, polish, the assistant and meeting summaries can all run on your Mac’s GPU and Neural Engine.

Which Macs does it support?

AirScribe targets Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 26. On Macs without a notch, its pill floats at the top of the screen and works identically.

Why does it need macOS permissions?

Each permission maps to a feature and is requested only when needed: Microphone for dictation, Input Monitoring for the hold key, Accessibility to type at your cursor, and system-audio or screen access only for meetings or optional context.

What makes it different?

AirScribe is fully open source, uses a multi-engine local router, requires no account and has no telemetry to opt out of. Its privacy floor is built into the product architecture.

How accurate is it?

Its router selects among Apple SpeechTranscriber, Qwen3-ASR and Whisper for each scenario. Custom vocabulary and optional context biasing further improve specialist names and jargon.
